How to Draw A Bearded Dragon – Let's Get Started!
Step 1
We shall start off this guide on how to draw a bearded dragon by drawing the head of the lizard.
First, draw a small circle with some reflective detail for the pupil of the eye. Then you can draw another circle around it for the outline of the eye.
We will then be drawing the front of the bearded dragon's face with some long, smooth lines. Also, you can add some details around the eye, add a nostril and then draw some small teeth along the mouth. For the back of the head, we will be taking a rather different approach to the drawing.
Bearded dragons have a lot of spiky texture on their bodies, and this is a defensive mechanism to make them look undesirable to predators.
These will be drawn with lots of small, pointy lines to make up the back section of the head. Then we're ready to move on!
Step 2 – Now, draw the bottom of the lizard's head
Now you're ready to add the famous 'beard' to your bearded dragon drawing. This beard isn't a real beard, but is rather a leathery section that can be puffed out when the lizard feels under duress.
When drawing this beard, we will be using a similar pointy line to the one that we used for the back of the head.
The points will be a bit less pointy for this part, however and there will also be some smooth lines incorporates in it.
Once you have replicated this beard as it appears in our reference image, we can then start drawing the back of the lizard using a slightly bumpy line that sharply curves to the side.
Then you will be ready to proceed on to step 3!
Step 3 – Next, draw the tail and first leg for the bearded dragon
For this next step of our guide on how to draw a bearded dragon, we will be drawing the rest of the tail outline whilst also adding the first leg for the lizard.
The line that you drew for the body in the previous step curled off to the left, and this will serve as the tail, and you can draw another curved line coming off the tip of it for the tail outline.
As shown in the reference image, it will be drawn in such a way as to make the tail a bit thicker the further it gets towards the base.
Finally, draw a small leg and foot, and then add some more spiky lines close to it for the start of the belly.
Step 4 – Now, draw another foot and a bit more of the body
Continuing on with your bearded dragon drawing, we will now be adding another foot to the front of the body.
This foot will be a bit larger and longer than the other one that you drew at the back of the body.
This leg will have a thinner base and then balloon out a bit into a thicker portion before ending in a clawed foot.
Much like many of the other parts of the body, this leg will be drawn with a pointy line to make it look a bit pricklier.
Step 5 – Add some final details to your bearded dragon drawing
We will be finishing off the outline for this awesome lizard in this step of our guide on how to draw a bearded dragon.
This will mainly entail drawing another leg for the bearded dragon, and much like the one you just drew it will be quite a bit larger than the back leg that you drew.
This leg will also be drawn using a combination of smooth and pointy lines.
Once this leg is drawn, you have finished this bearded dragon! It could be fun to draw a background for the picture, so what else can you think of to add?
Step 6 – Finish off your bearded dragon drawing with some color
Bearded dragons have a rather plain, muted color scheme as it helps them to camouflage into the sandy, desert environment they're found in.
For that reason, we used some light browns and beige colors for the coloring of our bearded dragon drawing example.
We used some sharp dashes of color shades throughout to further make this bearded dragon look a bit more prickly, and you could use a similar approach for your own one.
While you can use similar colors, you could also go for some unique color choices of your own! What do you think you will use to finish off your bearded dragon drawing?
